It is almost time to start wishing people happy new year, and although I wish town pastors were out in Lerwick tonight, I for one cannot be there as I have been advised to rest at home for the week....

So what is happening with Lerwick Town Pastors?

On the weekend of the 17th January 2009 Saturday 9am we have some instructors coming up from a training company called Resolute Training Limited

They are coming to train the Lerwick Town pastor volunteers in personal saftey and alsobeing aware of dangers etc.

This has kindly been sponsored by Shetland Churches Council Trust. (we had expected people to be trained in shetland but this could not be possible)

2009 will bring Lerwick Town pastors into a new light, asd we aim to hit the streets on Saturday nights instead or fridays.

We are still looking for a prayer team, and town pastors.

We have decided that although there appears to be a serious lack of people unwilling to come out with us in the early hours, or who are awaiting a band of angels armed with trumpets with points on the ends to give them a royal message from heaven of their need to stay out of bed a little longer and serve....we are going ahead anyhow. Some scribe at some point said about sending some peeps out into the world and make something called disciples or something like that......

Any how I do not judge just that we need more waiters and not as many cooks.

We are out every Friday night between 10pm and 3am come rain or shine.

We are available to talk to, or help you, we can also direct you to other agencies which may be able to support you better.

We have had a lot of good support from members of the public, bar owners, the Police and the local council.

We are now half way through the pilot scheme and at the end will close for evaluation but already know this is something which will be happening.

What is it:

What is a Town Pastor?

A Town Pastor, working as part of a team and in collaboration with the police and local council, seeks to be a positive influence principally on the streets of the town centre and other night life areas. Town Pastors would typically be out at the weekends in these places from around 10pm until the early hours.

The role of a Town Pastor is not primarily evangelistic but rather about listening, caring and helping young people. It is about showing concern and offering assistance where appropriate, in a nonjudgmental and unconditional way.

Town Pastors seek to be a positive presence on the streets, available to offer support to vulnerable people, deescalate potential trouble and generally assist the police and other agencies. For reasons of personal safety Town Pastors will carry radio communication.
